It was actually a moment of trying to think of the word "apogee," but only remembering "perigee," <em>looking it up</em> to get the antonym, trying to adjectify it (yes, I just made that word up, I like it, don't you?), failing, forgetting what I was doing in the first place, and wildly and incorrectly using "penultimate" instead. D'oh! I wish I was so clever.
